I come from a country where the only way to progress is up, which in my opinion is a big mistake. There are a lot of different ways to advance in our careers.

It was refreshing to move to another country where people value work-life balance and feel no shame in refusing a promotion that doesn't add value to their lives as a whole. It was an interesting concept I wasn't used to.

I feel so strongly about this that I've written an article that taps into the notion of refusing a promotion if it's not aligned to your long term goals. It takes courage.
