Project Management: Beyond the Basics
Revisiting old concepts to strengthen new ones
A while ago, I finished an online course called Project Management: Beyond the Basics from Future Learn that made a great impression on me. It was a short course, but it gave me a lot of useful insights.
When you’ve been working in the same profession for over ten years, it’s easy to take foundation knowledge for granted and rely upon the experience you built over the years; that’s why it’s important to revisit some concepts.
Below, I talk about some concepts that stood out to me, focusing on soft skills, and how I have been applying them into my day-to-day work life.
The Project Manager role
A Project Manager role can be very directive, such as being responsible for allocating tasks, managing budget, accountable for the deliverables, status report, and so on.
However, as you grow in this career, you realise that’s more than that; you become a shield, someone who needs to safeguard the team and, create suitable conditions for them to succeed, communicate and collaborate, allowing autonomy and space so they can do what they do best.
